"You are Living on the Other Side of Time" by Sun Ra

(transcribed from recording of Dec 28, 1980 2nd set at Detroit Jazz Center)
You’re living on the other side of time
Time… was crucified 2000 years ago
You’re living on the other side of time
Time was crucified
X , X was crucified 2000 years ago
You people of planet Earth
Have difficulties I see
Unsolvable
Confusion and chaos knocks upon the door
Everybody’s door
Confusion and chaos knocks upon every nation’s door
And every government's door
And every home
Confusion and chaos grows greater every day
Your intellects can’t solve the problem, can they?
Your religionists don’t know what to tell you to do, do they?
And your governments don’t know what to do, do they?
I am a different order of being
I know
I know everything
I have come to get you to realize the greatest of truths
I have come for you to confess your knowledge to me
I have come to make you say
I know
I know
I know
I know I don’t know!
I know
I know
I know I don’t know!

Started with a moonrise by Fletcher and his boys, then a short feature of pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines (1903-1983) whose early career trajectory is vaguely similar to Sun Ra's but in reverse. He started in PA, relocated to Chicago and then became the first big band leader to heavily tour the South, inspiring lots of regional jazz stylists all over the South including a young so-called Herman Blount. The rest of the first hour focuses mostly on Memphis blues and jazz styles.

The second hour is part 12 in the complete Sun Ra & the Omnivores Jet Set Arkestra live at the Detroit Jazz Center at the end of 1980. We are on the third night at the start of the 2nd set. About half of today's chunk is made up of unidentified compositions and improvisations with a nice space sermon over Discipline 27-II, starting with the above transcribed monologue and Sonny giving a lesson on the relative nature of our relationship to the sun: "Sunrise, sunset - It depends upon which side of the sun you on!" Astronomically speaking, it actually depends on which side of the Earth you on, but perhaps there is some deeper myth science heliocentricity at play. I leave off with a heavy funky piece of unknown provenance. Next week, I'll pick up right there with a Fletcher Henderson mini-tribute by the Arkestra and the middle of the 2nd set of December 29 including a modernized version of the 50's era sun ra composition "Images."

Third hour had a reclusive meditation on time thing going on, picking up on how we "are living on the other side of time" in a variety of contexts. Former WCBN DJ and Music Director Julia Holter's album "Have You In My Wilderness" is brand new on Domino. She is a musical genius and you should buy it.
